Visual Arts

Felicia Fuster 's work begins to develop from the parameters of a figurative expressionism, going towards an abstract language. In all Fuster’s artistic creation there is the will to understand artistic experience as a research of freedom and inner peace.

"The silence, a message of freedom".

From 1931 Felícia Fuster studied at both Intitut Maragall secondary school and the then recently-opened Escola Massana art school, where she specialised in stained-glass. Ten years later she entered Escola de Belles Arts i Oficis Artístics Llotja, which was later named after St. George, to expand her education in art.

In the 1940s she held an exhibition at the Galeria Syra gallery as one of the up-and-coming young artists of the time. Shortly afterwards she won third prize at an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid with a piece that went beyond traditional crafting and was labelled as a clearly experimental work.
However, with the situation the country was in and Felícia's need to expand her artistic horizons, she moved to France in 1950 when she was 29.

Felícia took a break from her artistic work in the 1960s, but 20 years later she took it up again from an unexpected perspective. Her paintings got towards pictorial abstraction, taking the cosmological vision from oriental cultures and philosophies.

This shows the strong influence Fuster received by the Eastern world when she went on a short journey to Japan in 1985 and then, ten years later, to China. From those eastern civilisations she took the ability to represent and construct silence and, at the same time, the multiplicity of being. At that time Fuster started to work on her series “Plurivisions”, which later became her most particular way of working.

Those works can be observed from many points of view. Thus, the painting itself changes its positions using an inner mechanical device. This works in order to make the viewers conscious of the relativity and variability of their own sight. One among multiplicity. The silence as an overwhelming of loneliness. As Fuster says: a message of freedom.
